Berschauers in Kratzke

In the late 1980's the opening of Russia also opened the possibility of information flow from Russia about our ancestors along the Volga River. Along with the opening of Russia came many entrepreneurs and to genealogy researchers this was very welcome. In 1995 with the help of Brent Mai, Professor at Vanderbilt and Kratzke Village Coordinator for the American Historical Society of Germans From Russia, we began a quest to learn more about the Berschauer ancestors in Kratzke. Dr. Igor Pleve, Professor at the University of Saratov, and his wife Ludmila had been doing research on the Volga Germans and we enlisted their help to research the Berschauer surname. At the end of 1996 we finally received the much-awaited information. The information was disappointing as well as exhilarating. Disappointing because the first Berschauer to come from Prussia to Russia could not be established for certain. However, Igor and Ludmila did not give up easily. They found a Daniel Burgard who had three children, recorded in church records, with the same names as the three Berschauer births recorded in church records. The Burgard family had no recorded descendants. In 2001 we gained enough *information to be certain that Daniel was the first and only Berschauer to immigrate to Kratzke. *Early recorded marriages between the Berschauers and Mai familys, it continued for several generations.

I have studied our ancestor's families and have found many linkages to the Berschauers of today. Among the first recorded Berschauers found in Kratzke church records were the birth of three children. They were Georg Jakob, Johann Christoph and Katharina Magdalena born 1789, 1792 and 10 January 1793. Their mother and father were not listed in these records. We later found three children recorded to Daniel Burgard. These three children shared the same names as the first three children found. Also other children of Daniel married into the Mai family as did the first three Berschauers found. The children of Johann Christoph are the ancestors of most of the descendant Berschauers I have found in the United States. His sons Georg Philipp married Elisabeth Margaretha Mai; Johann Georg married Katharina Elisabeth Deines and Johann Jakob married Maria Barbara Maier. Studying the descendants of these three families will assist one in seeing the relationships of Berschauers in America today. Because of this web page I continue to meet more relatives that I am directly related to both in the US and Europe. Since there was only one immigrant Berschauer found in Kratzke I believe any Berschauer who knows his ancestors are from Kratzke are related.

The First Berschauers Found In Kratzke

Daniel Burgard is included in The Berschauer Genealogy because he was the immigrant in Kratzke from Prussia, we concluded that he was the first, possably the only, Berschauer to immigrate to Kratzke, Russia. Daniel was a silk weaver and farmer from Berlin, Prussia and he belonged to the Reformed Church. His first wife was Katharina Margaretha mnu. She b c1742 (Germany). They arrived in the Kratzke colony on 7 Aug 1766.
